After reports that people were having trouble updating to the new iOS 9.3, Apple has said that it will “temporarily pull back” the upgrade for the iPhone 5S, iPad Air and earlier versions of those devices.
“Updating some iOS devices (iPhone 5s and earlier and iPad Air and earlier) to iOS 9.3 can require entering the Apple ID and password used to set up the device in order to complete the software update,” Apple said in a statement to NBC News on Friday.
“In some cases, if customers do not recall their password, their device will remain in an inactivated state until they can recover or reset their password,” Apple said.

After the update was initially released, Apple was flooded with complaints on its support website and Twitter feed by customers who were hitting a wall when they were asked for the password used to set up the device in the first place.
Owners of these older devices won’t have to wait too long for a fix. Apple says it will release a bug-free version sometime in the next few days that will skip the problematic password step.
