Nielsen is expanding on its TV ratings by giving studios detailed statistics on nearly 1,000 shows streaming on services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Instant Video.

That number was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and was later confirmed to NBC News by a Nielsen spokesperson.

Overall, Nielsen is tracking around 3,000 episodes, the company told NBC News, and is sharing the results only with the studios it counts as customers.

Nielsen is not tracking original series from streaming companies, like "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Transparent" from Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video, respectively.

Netflix doesn't share statistics on how particular TV shows and movies fare on its service, leaving outsiders in the dark as to whether reruns of "30 Rock" or "The X-Files" are racking up big numbers.

If studios know their content is doing well, it could give them leverage in future distribution deals. Nielsen started tracking streaming data in a beta program that started in December of last year.
