An online fundraiser to generate funds for charities in the name of slain British lawmaker Jo Cox has raised more than $820,000, making it the largest U.K. effort in the history of the popular website where it was hosted.
Donors have given a little more than 574,000 pounds (or $824,000 USD) as of early Sunday local time, three days after Cox was fatally stabbed and shot in Birstall. The money will go to three charities chosen by Cox’s family.
The website, Gofundme, said Saturday that the effort is the largest U.K. fundraiser hosted on the website since the site was launched in 2010.
Cox, a rising star in the opposition Labour Party a mother of two, was shot and stabbed in broad daylight after a meeting with her constituents in Birstall, near Leeds, northern England.

Her alleged attacker, Thomas Mair, 52, was charged with murder and weapons related charges Saturday.
A motive in the attack has not been established by authorities, but Cox was killed just a week before Britain votes in a historic referendum over whether to leave the European Union, raising questions over whether the murder may have been related to the poll. Cox was opposed to leaving the EU.
In court in London Saturday, Mair gave his name as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."
A memorial was held for Cox in northern England Saturday. Cox’s husband, Brendan, thanked supporters Saturday.
"The outpouring of love to our family has been humbling," he said in a Tweet. He also thanked those who have supported her causes.
The charities chosen by the family include the group HOPE not Hate — which is dedicated to challenging "politics of hate and extremism within local communities across Britain." The Royal Voluntary Service and the White Helmets, which works in war-torn Syria, are the other two.
Until the Cox fundraiser, the largest gofundme campaign in the UK was for Mike Brandon, whose wife sought donations to help her husband get treatment for a form of leukemia. That effort raised 452,511 pounds, or around $649,760 USD, the website said.
