Two people were killed when a plane crashed into a residence in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, local and federal authorities said.

The victims were on the plane, and no one inside the home reported injuries, Akron police said. Calls about the crash began coming in just before 4 p.m., police said.

Only two people were on the Piper PA-28 aircraft, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, the FAA said.

The home caught fire following the crash, the Akron Fire Department said in a statement. Videos posted online showed the home’s garage engulfed in flames while sirens sounded in the background.

A small part of the plane’s tail could be seen in the home’s driveway.

District Fire Chief Sierjie Lash said that the scene remained active and that multiple local and state agencies, including the state fire marshal, responded.

“We are letting residents get to their homes,” Lash said. “This is, this is where they live. But we’re keeping the scene — the direct scene — we’re keeping that secure.”

The plane departed from Akron Fulton Regional Airport, which is about 3 miles east of the crash site, the State Highway Patrol said.

Representatives for the airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
