Nearly two dozen people were injured when gunfire erupted at an Oklahoma campground during an "unsanctioned party" Sunday that had been "advertised across multiple social media platforms," police said.

At least 12 of the about 23 people injured were hospitalized in the 9 p.m. incident at the Scissortail Campground at Arcadia Lake in Edmond, Edmond police said.

"The incident occurred during an unsanctioned party that began after dark and was advertised across multiple social media platforms, drawing a large crowd of young adults from across the metro area,” police said in a statement.

"The event was not a permitted or reserved gathering."

Edmond Mayor Mark Nash confirmed no permitted events were set that night.

"To our knowledge, there was no reservation through the parks department," he added.

There's a guard shack on a road leading up the area, but Nash said it's not designed for security.

"That’s a fee shack, not a guard shack, necessarily," Nash told reporters. "And there is staff there at this time of year until 6 p.m. unless an event has been scheduled at the pavilion there in that park."

No one was in custody early Monday, and it was unclear what preceded the gunfire.

Nine shooting victims were being treated early Monday at the Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, while three were being treated at Integris Health Edmond Hospital, a spokesperson for the hospitals told NBC News.

"These are all victims of the shooting in Edmond this evening. No other patients that Integris is aware of at their hospitals involved in the shooting," the spokesperson said.

The campground is about 20 miles north of Oklahoma City and about 6.5 miles east of where disgruntled postal worker Patrick Sherrill killed 14 co-workers in 1986. It remains the deadliest workplace shooting in U.S. history.

The lake, popular for water sports, was created in 1987 in a joint operation between the city of Edmond and the Army Corps of Engineers.
