Size Matters

You choose a gorgeous (and expensive) cuff for your beloved, wrap it up and slide it under the tree. She gleefully rips it open... only to find that the bracelet is too small to fit her wrist. Ouch. Some of this year's hot jewelry styles like cuffs and choker necklaces sound foolproof, but actually aren't one-size-fits-all. We asked Ruth Fortunoff, of the jewelry store Fortunoff, for advice:

Look for some give. Some cuffs can be slightly expanded or pinched closed to fit. Similarly, look for chokers with extension chains or expandable spring wires.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Cuffs typically don't suit women with exceptionally thin wrists, but jewelers will sometimes special-order smaller sizes.

Details count. If you buy online, make sure you review the entire product description, including the item's exact dimensions, so you can estimate the fit.

Know the policy. Make sure you can return any item that doesn't fit properly.

But if sizing issues really overwhelm you, there's always another option: buy a brooch.
