At least 20 people were killed when a ship with more than 80 passengers and crew aboard capsized in southwestern China on Monday, the Xinhua news agency reported.
Rescuers found 20 bodies and 57 people were rescued after the ship capsized on the Jialing River near the town of Jinxi in Sichuan province, the news agency said.
Six others were missing, it said, adding the accident was under investigation.
Local police had detained the owner and operator of the boat, but Xinhua quoted police as saying they were not thought to be responsible for the accident, although “they could not exclude the possibility of overloading.”
The accident occurred just days after an overloaded ferry sank in China’s powerful Yellow River killing at least 12 people and leaving 36 still missing.
