John McCain crosses the Syrian border

Arizona Sen. John McCain visited Syria on Monday to meet with rebel leaders in the war-struck country.

Arizona Sen. John McCain visited Syria on Monday to meet with rebel leaders in the war-struck country.

Sen. John McCain on Monday traveled to Syria in an unannounced and surprise visit amidst the country’s ongoing civil war. Violence in Syria has spread across the border into Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon.

McCain, a Republican from Arizona, is one of Congress’ strongest advocates for increasing America’s role in the war. His secret trip to meet with rebel leaders in Syria wasn’t a surprise to the White House and State Department, though.

New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez was in Jerusalem on Tuesday to meet with Israeli leaders.

“I think Senator McCain, who I was with in Jordan before coming to Israel, has made it very clear,” Menendez, a Democrat, said Tuesday on AMR. “He believes that we have to change the dynamics in Syria in order to both stop the bloodshed and see if we can achieve a result that we would want to see.”
