Paul Barrett: the country should consider armed guards or police officers in schools

This morning NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, responding (a week after the fact) to the Newtown massacre, said that “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” He laid out a plan which included putting “armed police officers” in every single school across America.

Paul Barrett, a Bloomberg Business Week senior writer and author of Glock The Rise of America’s Guns, says there is no reason why the country shouldn’t consider armed guards or police officers in schools. “Personally if I ran a school, yes, I would have a cop who knows how to use a gun in front of a school. Will it solve all the problems? No. Is it ideal? No. But we do that at airports, we do that at Yankee Stadium. When I go to a baseball game I do not see a serious argument against doing that.” He also said it makes more sense to focus on controlling the sale and flow of ammunition that it does banning assault weapons.  “A more promising response to Newtown would be one that stresses keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerous mentally ill,” he said.

With Vice President Biden now in charge of the Gun Violence Task Force will we actually see a change?  As Toure pointed out during today’s show,is this really how we will remember those 20 children–by encouraging people to go out and buy more guns?
