Bakersfield, CA- The Summer Olympics are still months away, but today hundreds of athletes had a chance to go for the gold.
Athletes from all over Southern California came to participate in the Kern County Special Olympics Big, Little Area Meet.More than 450 athletes and trainers kicked off the event at North High School with an opening ceremony that included a parade.
Athletes showcased off their skills in events like swimming, basketball, gymnastics, and tennis.This event gives athletes who usually don't get a chance to play the opportunity to compete in their favorite sport.
The meet, now in its 15th year, is one of the largest events of its kind in Southern California.
