Facebook Subscribe Button Could Save You Having to 'Like' Everything

You may like Coca Cola or BMW, but do you "like" it enough to let it fill up your Facebook feed?

You may like Coca Cola or BMW, but do you "like" it enough to let it fill up your Facebook feed?

For a while, the social network has allowed you to have a smaller commitment to a page by "subscribing" rather than liking, but a new feature may make it easier to do.

Facebook has just begun testing a "Subscribe" button on company pages, similar to those you see for individuals. Subscribing has been possible before, but it was hidden under a dropdown menu.

When you activated it, you added the page to an Interest List that you had to create. Doing that presents just highlights from the pages you subscribe to in your newsfeed, rather than flooding it with every update.

When TechNewsDaily asked Facebook about the new Subscribe button, it said only: “We are currently testing the ability to subscribe to Pages with a small group [of users]. This feature allows people to receive updates from Pages without liking the Page. We have no further details to share at this time.”

Meanwhile, if you'd like to get highlights from a company's or organization's pages using the current method, here's how you do it:

  • Click the gear icon next to "Message" in the upper right of the screen.
  • From the dropdown menu, select "Add to Interest List…" and then select a list you have made, or create a new one. You'll see just highlights from those pages rather than every update.
