Adobe has released a software update for Flash Player that fixes two critical bugs and, most notably, now enables automatic security updates.
Released yesterday (March 28), Adobe Flash 11.1.102.63 tackles memory corruption vulnerabilities that could crash infected systems and allow an attacker to remotely take them over, Adobe said in its press release.
In fixing the security bugs, which exist in Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris and the Android operating system, Adobe took a serious step forward in ensuring the continued security of its users against malicious attacks and threats. When downloading Flash, the installer prompts users with a new dialog box offering the option to "Install updates automatically when available."
In contrast to Adobe's former policy, which notified users when updates were available, automatic updates ensure users are always running the most current software. It's a positive move for Adobe, especially considering how frequently cybercriminals attempt to exploit Flash vulnerabilities to gain a foothold in the computers of potential targets.
In rolling out automatic, silent updates, Adobe Flash joins Google Chrome, which includes the feature, and Mozilla Firefox, which will fold it into an updated browser due for a June 5 release.
The newest version of Flash is available for download at Adobe Flash Player Download Center on Adobe's website.
