Bomb planted in tricycle kills 11 in Pakistan

A bomb planted in a child's tricycle exploded outside a shop in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 11 people and damaging several stores and hotels, police said.

A bomb planted in a child's tricycle exploded outside a shop in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 11 people and damaging several stores and hotels, police said.

The attack occurred in the main bazaar in the town of Risalpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Mohammad Hussain, police chief for surrounding Nowshera district. Shoppers were buying goods for an upcoming Muslim holiday when the bomb went off. At least 23 people were wounded, Hussain said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Pakistani Taliban has carried out many bombings throughout the northwest.

Also Thursday, unknown gunmen opened fire on police at the gate of a hospital in the northwest town of Dera Ismail Khan, killing one policeman on duty, said Mohammad Nawaz, the local police chief.

Pakistan has seen a wave of suicide and bomb attacks in the past years, most of them in the northwest where troops are battling Pakistani Taliban militants.

Several military operations have dealt a heavy blow to insurgents but militants have shown they are still able to carry out bomb and suicide attacks.

There have been several attacks since al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. special forces in a secret raid in another Pakistani garrison town in May.

Militants have vowed to avenge bin Laden's death.

At least 47 people were killed in a suicide attack on a mosque in Pakistan's tribal region of Khyber near the Afghan border last week.
