'Just pure luck': Boy survives 3-story plunge

A 3-year-old boy falls from a three-story building and survives with only minor injuries.

A 3-year-old boy spent the night in the hospital after falling from a three-story building but walked away with only minor injuries.

It happened around the boy's bedtime Wednesday night at an apartment on Des Moines' south side, NBC station WHO of Des Moines reported.

"They said that he just seems to be fine. It's a miracle, but he's fine," neighbor Jeff Lipscomb told the station.

Witnesses said the boy, Imanuel Hendrixson, was leaning against the screen window when it gave way. He fell more than 20 feet.

"It makes my heart drop just to think the chances of that child getting hurt or killed were immense," said Lalonna Karnes.

A neighbor saw the boy fall and called 911. When medics arrived, the child's mother was at his side, and he was alert and talking. He still went to the hospital for observation.

"It's one of those things, it's just pure luck," says Des Moines Fire Captain Steve Brown.

He reminds parents to check the rooms in their home. "You need to think safety when you're putting a child's bedroom together. Move things away from the windows, what they can crawl up on. Make sure there's locks on windows," Brown said.

His parents declined to comment on his injuries. Des Moines police said the fall appeared to be an accident and it's unlikely any charges would be filed.
