Two women's sports teams have set a new Guinness World Record for the longest rugby marathon by playing against each other continuously for more than 24 hours.

Two women's sports teams have set a new Guinness World Record for the longest rugby marathon by playing against each other continuously for more than 24 hours.

The two record-setting club sports teams are from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and Keene State College in Keene, N.H. They met on April 23 on the Williams College campus with the goal of playing for at least 24 hours, which is the minimum set by GWR guidelines.

But the rugby match wasn't just about attempting to gain the Guinness World Records title -- the teams collaborated and organized a fundraiser event, with the funds raised during the attempt donated to colon cancer and breast cancer research.

The day of the record attempt started off with wind, hail, rain, and cold temperatures. Emergency medical technician advised that the athletes cancel the match because of the unfavorable playing conditions, but luckily the weather improved and they were able to play.

The match lasted from the morning of April 23 until the morning of April 24th, with the final official duration of the game clocking in at 24 hours, 5 minutes and 15 seconds. A typical rugby game lasts for 80 minutes. Teams usually score no more than a few dozen points per regular game, but the rugby marathon's final score was Williams with 818 points and Keene State with 711.

The teams now share the GWR title for the longest rugby marathon.
