India test fires surface-to-air missile

India test-fired a short-range, surface-to-air missile on Friday, the second such operation in two days, according to news reports.

India test-fired a short-range, surface-to-air missile on Friday, the second such operation in two days, according to news reports.

The homemade Trishul was fired from a mobile launcher in the eastern state of Orissa, according to the Press Trust of India.

The supersonic Trishul is capable of targeting aircraft and sea-skimming missiles. The solid-fuel missile can carry a warhead of up to 33 pounds. It has a range of about 5 1/2 miles and a radar guidance system, PTI said.

The Trishul has a triple battlefield role for India's army, navy and air force.

Defense Ministry officials could not be reached immediately for confirmation. Pakistan's foreign ministry had no immediate comment, either, but that country also tests missiles capable of reaching India.

India's test was unlikely to affect the confidence-building measures under way by the nuclear-armed rivals.
