A car exploded near a synagogue in the northern Italian city of Modena early Thursday morning and the man inside the car died, Italian news agencies reported.

The man, who was apparently a Jordanian, set himself on fire. When police approached to try and put out the flames, the car, which ran on flammable liquid propane gas, exploded, the Ansa and Agi agencies reported, citing police.

No other injuries were reported. It was not immediately clear how close the car was to the synagogue or if the police, who were not immediately available, were treating the incident as a suicide bombing.
