PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Newly released statistics show Oregon middle schools made significant gains in student performance on state reading, math and science tests during the 2008-2009 school year. The state's elementary and high schools showed less progress, posting marginal gains or, in some cases, losses. Oregon Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo says the gains show that providing individualized instruction for students who need it is starting to pay off. Given the budget problems confronting schools, Castillo says it will be harder to duplicate such gains in the coming years, but she is confident it can be done. Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
