Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu -- who is viewed as a possible swing vote in the ongoing health care debate -- said Sunday she is leaning against a public health insurance option.
Landrieu appeared on CNN to discuss health care reform. During the appearance, she indicated she was unlikely to support the broader Democratic proposals.
“I would tend not to,” Landrieu answered when asked about a public health insurance option included in some health care reform bills. “But, we’ve got to keep working to find solutions.”
Landrieu instead advocated for cost-reduction measures. She also told CNN anchor John King “it would be very difficult” for her to support a health care reform bill that allowed taxpayer-funded abortions.
Landrieu accentuated her moderate-to-conservative views in campaigning successfully for re-election last year. Her opponent, Republican state treasurer John Kennedy, attempted to link her with liberal groups and with then-presidential candidate Barack Obama.
If Landrieu does vote against any White House-endorsed health care reform plans, she would likely be in the minority within her party.
