Scenic properties near Smith Mountain Lake that are part of Sunset Cay — a development project in Moneta that stalled due to legal issues and the economy’s effect on the housing market — will be auctioned on Sept. 17 at Mariner’s Landing. Torrence, Read & Forehand Auctions of Lynchburg will auction nine homes, 22 residential lots, two commercial lots and 27 additional acres located on Hendricks Store Road in Bedford County. Open houses of the properties are set for 1 to 4 p.m. today and Sept. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 13, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16. Smith Mountain Lake Partners planned for more than 1,000 homes, a golf course and commercial attractions. Bedford County officials approved rezoning to allow the plans in late 2007 but developers did not move forward on an option to purchase several hundred acres and later filed for bankruptcy.
