Brothers Charged In Doctor's Killing

Two brothers are arrested in connection with the killing of a prominent Houston doctor, KPRC Local 2 reports.

Two brothers were arrested in connection with the killing of a prominent Houston doctor, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

Dr. J. Mario Gonzalez, 56, was shot to death Saturday after three intruders came into his weekend ranchhouse near Bellville in Austin County.

Cristobal Galvan Cerna, 23, and Moises Galvan Cerna, 18, were charged in the case, according to investigators.

One of the ranch hands, Noel Galvan Cerna, was also shot and hospitalized in stable condition. He is the brother of the two suspects, but investigators said they do not believe he was involved.

The doctor's 29-year-old wife and 2-year-old son were also home, but were able to hide from the intruders.

Austin County sheriff's deputies released pictures of the intruders' vehicles, which led to a break in the case.

One was a white, late 1990s Ford F-150 extended cab, long wheel base pickup truck without a front license plate. The other was described as possibly a 1993 dark Honda Civic.

"When we looked into the registration of that truck, we discovered that they obtained new license plates for the truck and said the old ones were damaged, even though the registration had not expired," an investigator said. "That aroused our attention. It was later determined that it was the stepfather's truck."

Officials said the stepfather was not involved in the crime.

A third suspect, a cousin of the brothers, is also wanted in connection with the case, according to investigators.

A $5,000 reward was offered for information. Contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Gonzalez was chief of critical care at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
