Police arrest men in Sarkozy bank theft

French police said Tuesday they have arrested two men near Paris on suspicion of breaking into the personal bank account of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

French police said they have arrested two men near Paris on suspicion of breaking into the personal bank account of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

A source close to the inquiry said the two men are being held by the anti-terrorist section of the crime squad charged with investigating matters linked to the head of state. The official asked not to be named, citing official policy.

He said the two men arrested Tuesday are suspected of stealing the bank details of several people without realizing the identity of their victims. They are believed to have used small sums to pay mobile telephone bills.

Government spokesman Luc Chatel said Sunday that Sarkozy reported the theft last month and filed a complaint.
