Mom accused of funding son's death row calls

Texas prison officials have arrested the mother of a death row inmate and accused her of illegally paying for cell phone minutes for a phone that was smuggled to her imprisoned son.

Texas prison officials have arrested the mother of a death row inmate and accused her of illegally paying for cell phone minutes for a phone that was smuggled to her imprisoned son.

Police say 60-year-old Lorraine Tabler was arrested Monday when she arrived at Austin's airport on a flight from Georgia. Texas corrections officials say at the same time she was arrested, they were confiscating a phone from her son, 29-year-old Richard Tabler.

Prison officials said Richard Tabler and as many as nine other death row inmates used the phone for nearly 3,000 calls over the past 30 days.

His mother is charged with providing a prohibited item to an inmate.

Richard Tabler was condemned for killing two men during a 2004 shooting spree.
