Mountain lion seen near California school

Police surrounded a house two blocks from an elementary school Thursday after residents said a mountain lion may have taken shelter under the home, but trappers found no evidence of the animal.

Police surrounded a house two blocks from an elementary school Thursday after residents said a mountain lion may have taken shelter under the home, but trappers found no evidence of the animal.

Teachers at the school had been told not to let children out for recess, and residents in the neighborhood 30 miles east of San Francisco had been urged to stay in doors.

Wildlife officials set up baited cages and had tranquilizer guns ready. When the trappers climbed into a crawl space beneath the house, however, they found nothing to indicate a mountain lion had been there, said Department of Fish and Game spokesman Kyle Orr.

Searchers went through the surrounding neighborhood but only spotted what appeared to be raccoon tracks, Orr said.

In recent weeks, several mountain lion sightings have been reported in the area.
