A former Salinas Little League coach convicted of molesting an 8-year-old child must undergo a 90-day psychological evaluation before being sentenced, a judge decided Thursday. David Martin, the defendant in the case, faces eight years in jail.
Martin was supposed to be sentenced Thursday, but instead he will spend 30 days in prison during part of his evaluation, the judge decided.
A court order for a psychological evaluation is not rare, but officials said it's not always done.
Before he ordered the evaluation, Judge Richard Curtis told Martin that the molesters Curtis has put away either had a third-grade education, are from other countries or speak another language. But Martin's defense attorney, Jim Dozier, said Martin is a different molester.
Dozier said the former Pop Warner and Little League coach has many good qualities but is a broken man who wishes he were dead.
The judge said he would use the information learned from the evaluation to determine whether probation is suitable for Martin or whether a prison term is more appropriate.
