Josh Mankiewicz reports on the murder of American University professor Sue Marcum in Bethesda, Maryland.

Every morning, without fail, Sue Marcum called her best friend, Larry March.

It was their routine — reliable as clockwork.

But one Monday morning, his phone never rang.

Unable to shake the feeling that something was wrong, Larry left work early and drove straight to Sue’s home in Bethesda, Maryland. She didn’t answer the door. He had a key, so he let himself in. What he found stopped him cold. Sue’s normally tidy home was in chaos.

Larry thought she had been robbed. But there was no sign of Sue.

Then he walked to the basement. At the bottom of the stairs was his friend Sue, dead.

It appeared to be a robbery gone wrong, but responding officers weren’t so sure. Murders during burglaries are rare.

Sue’s killer took a number of steps to throw investigators off track, but DNA recovered from the scene pointed them toward someone she had known and trusted...

What followed was a years-long manhunt that crossed international borders. But would justice for Sue ever come?
